One day in Sintra, an UNESCO heritage patrimony, easily reached from Lisbon.

We spent one day in Sintra and loved it! Such a beautiful place, the castles, the hills, the nature… The train from Rossio Railway Station , in Lisbon, is the easiest way to reach there. It takes about 40 min and costs € 4,30 return.

There are seven main attractions to be visited and we suggest you to go really early. The city gets packed, especially in summer time. You can choose from several bus companies to move around town. Doesn’t matter which one you get, there will be traffic. We opted by the local lines (434,435,403) which were way cheaper than the other options.

With only one day in Sintra it’s not possible to cover all attractions, which are: Castelo dos Mouros , Pena National Palace,   Chalet e Jardim da Condessa D’Edla,  Palácio Nacional de SintraQueluz National PalacePalácio de Monserrate  and Convento dos Capuchos. We decided to visit only Castelo dos Mouros and Parque e Palácio da Pena, so we would have time to go to Cabo da Roca.

Castelo dos Mouros
Located on the top of Sintra’s hills, it’s constructions dates from 10th century when the Muslins conquered the Iberian peninsula. That was my favourite one. The views are amazing and the castle is really really well-kept.

The castle has a really irregular shape.

The forest around the castle is spectacular!

Parque e Palácio da Pena or Pena Palace

Natalie’s favorite. This palace is formed by three different structures, a former monastery in Manueline style, a building dated from the 19th century and a third structure that links the two buildings. With a stunning interior, the palace started to be used as the  royal residence by King Carlos I. Our fellow blogger Sofie wrote a detailed post about Pena Palace.

Cabo da Roca
The westernmost point of continental Europe. Be ready for stunning views, cliffs and REALLY strong wind!  We were sweating in Sintra but when we arrived in Cabo da Roca even with the sun we were freezing!  The wind was so strong that in some points we couldn’t stay still. Anyway totally worth it! Hope to return there for at least a weekend!

There are several trails around Cabo da Roca.

In order to check the updated prices and opening time have a look on Parques de Sintra website.

And was with this amazing view that we finish our trip around Lisbon.

    • Hello Sally,
Tks for the heads up. I look back in my notes and found the Euro 9 from Lisbon to Sintra.
Then a quick look at CP Portugal and got the same amount you mentioned, Euro 4,30 return.
      Already updated the article.
      Tks again!!!
