Loved reading your experience in Siberia. I recognised the photo first and then it was confirmed when I read the title – my home land. I lived in Barnaul for years before leaving abroad (now live in NZ) and I took my kiwi boyfriend back to Altai/Barnaul and we actually went to Belokhuriha twice (once in winter and once in summer). The region is so beautiful and I agree on all points, but the main is that you must travel to places like that to really understand the culture. Moscow and St Petersburg are good, but not the representation of the real Russia.
Hi Tonya,
Your comment made my day!! Altai is a beautiful region and I’m so happy that we had the opportunity to discover it. As you said, is in the small towns that you can really meet the local people and culture.
All the best to you in NZ.
Nat
Thanks for the info! I’m planning a trip for November and thought 2 weeks in Moscow and St petersberg before coming to the altai mountains for day hikes and skiing but I cant drive. Do you think 5 days in Belokhuriha just for day hikes and skiing without a car will be ok? Also do you know how much ski rental was?
Many thanks!
Hi Callun,
5 days are ok, sorry really don’t remember the rates but it wasn’t expensive.
Awesome experience!
p.s. You mentioned you did not see any bears – but bears are sleeping in the winter! 🙂
You got it right! 😉
Thanks for stopping by!
